The Senior Construction Manager (Sr. CM) is a senior field leadership position responsible for overseeing a portfolio of projects and/or providing senior-level leadership on a single large, complex project. The Sr. CM directs and develops Construction Managers (CMs) and Construction Engineers (CEs), ensuring consistent execution quality, cost performance, and schedule adherence across all assigned work. The Sr. CM serves as a primary construction interface with executive leadership, clients, and cross-functional teams, and plays an active role in preconstruction — including estimate reviews, schedules, and execution planning.
Core Job Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Direct, mentor, and develop a team of Construction Managers and Construction Engineers; provide performance feedback and support career growth
- Set clear expectations for each CM regarding project execution standards, communication cadence, cost management, and client interface
- Identify staffing gaps across the portfolio and coordinate with Director of Construction on resource deployment and hiring needs
- Ensure each CM has a full understanding of their project’s Construction Execution Plan, budget, schedule, and contract requirements
- Delegate appropriate authority to CMs while maintaining accountability for portfolio-level outcomes
- Monitor cost, schedule, progress, and productivity across all assigned projects; analyze deviations and direct corrective action
- Conduct regular project reviews with CMs to assess execution health, surface risks, and maintain alignment
- Advise executive leadership of developments that could affect project schedule, cost, client relationships, or interdepartmental operations
- Review and approve change order documentation, cost analyses, and project reports prepared by CMs
Preconstruction Support
- Participate in FEL1/2/3 planning, constructability reviews, and bid development to embed field perspective into estimates and execution strategies
- Contribute to construction schedule development, work breakdown structures, resource loading, and equipment planning during preconstruction phases
- Support the Estimating team with labor productivity inputs, subcontractor evaluation, and construction risk identification
- Review and provide input on contract scope documents, specifications, and drawings prior to project award
Client & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as a senior H+M representative in client meetings, project reviews, and executive briefings; develop and maintain strong owner relationships
- Develop an atmosphere of open and honest communication between H+M and Owner, with the goal of excellence in client relationships
- Identify key project stakeholders early in the project lifecycle and establish communication protocols with the project team
- Represent H+M during bid process, scope development, and project management forums
Safety & Quality
- Champion H+M’s “Take It Personal” safety culture; actively promote HSE awareness as a natural part of field leadership
- Ensure all projects within the portfolio meet H+M Quality standards; support corrective action when deficiencies are identified
- Participate in safety walks, incident reviews, and HSE leadership activities across assigned sites
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management preferred; equivalent field experience considered in lieu of degree
- Minimum 12 years of industrial construction experience with at least 5 years in a Construction Manager role, EPC experience beneficial
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple concurrent projects and/or leading a team of field supervisor
- Deep familiarity with self-perform construction and multi-project execution environments. Experience in EPC delivery preferred
- Strong command of construction cost management, schedule control, and change management practice
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills with the ability to influence across all levels of an organization
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with a track record of delivering projects within budget and schedule
- Strong interpersonal skills; capable of establishing respect and credibility through actions, judgment, and personal presence
