Senior Construction Inspector - Transportation

Morton Thomas & Associates, Inc. (AMT, Inc.) is hiring Senior Construction Inspectors in the Transportation sector to support projects throughout the VDOT Salem District and surrounding areas. Interested applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, be available for nighttime shifts, OT and/or weekends as needed, capable of working independently and within a team, and subject to background check. We currently have potential openings for Senior Construction Inspectors who have VDOT inspection experience in roadways, bridges, and asphalt along with current certifications.

Responsibilities

• Monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects of routine to moderate complexity, under the direction of a Construction Manager or designee.
• Monitor contractor’s operations to ensure compliance with contract terms and specifications.
• Coordinate and direct all phases of construction inspection of projects, especially those complicated by extensive traffic control, environmental sensitivities, or requiring coordination with property owners, utility companies, or government agencies.
• Coordinate and schedule construction phases with contractors and agency personnel.
• Review and monitor contractors’ plans of operation and advise on violations.
• Conduct field measurements of pay items and material testing.
• Maintain comprehensive project records including diaries, material notebooks, as-built plans, pay quantities, progress schedules, work orders, and estimates.
• Assist in developing work orders, investigations, and Notices of Intent analysis.
• Evaluate progress schedules and perform work order analysis.
• Serve as Lead Inspector when necessary, managing a team of inspectors.
• Inspect and monitor field work such as excavations, drainage, road surfaces, and structures.
• Report contractor’s daily production rates.
• Schedule work and inspections with contractors and agency staff.
• Advise on violations and operational adjustments.
• Perform field measurements and material tests.
• Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey equipment.
• Oversee installation of erosion controls, work zones, and traffic devices.
• Recommend plan changes for field conditions or cost savings.
• Ensure compliance with federal labor and DBE requirements.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent
• 7+ years highway construction experience
• Valid driver’s license
• Fluent in English
• Knowledge of roadway, structure, and bridge construction, materials, standards, and specifications
• VDOT specifications, manuals, and certifications relevant to inspection
• Nuclear Gauge Safety Training
• OSHA 10 Hour Training
