Job summary

Wallace Montgomery is seeking a Senior Construction Inspector in Richmond, VA to inspect, observe, and document construction and maintenance projects. You will perform soil and materials testing, work under a Project Engineer, and frequently coordinate with client staff.

Qualifications

Location: Richmond, Virginia (Richmond office) – Remote reporting from Roanoke, Virginia.
Salary Range: $31.38 - $45.00 per hour.

Summary

Wallace Montgomery is seeking a Senior Construction Inspector to join our team. The position involves inspecting, observing, and documenting construction and maintenance projects, performing tests on soils and materials. Work is performed under a Project Engineer and often under a client’s employee. Inspectors travel across the state, may work night shift, and must hold a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.

Essential Functions
  • Perform field inspections of construction and maintenance projects, including existing roadways, structures, and facilities.
  • Conduct and observe tests on soils, asphalt, concrete, aggregates, bituminous products, metal products, and industrial coatings.
  • Respond to data requests.
  • Participate in traffic control activities.
  • Complete the Inspector's Daily Report (IDR) documenting labor, equipment, and material used each day.
  • Maintain daily progress photos.
  • File Force Account records for unresolved changes when work must still be performed.
  • Maintain a construction sketchbook containing documentation.
  • Reconcile pay quantities on progress payments submitted by the Contractor.
  • Attend meetings as needed.
  • Participate in change order negotiations when appropriate.
  • Participate in CPM schedule meetings when appropriate.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license (company vehicle provided).
  • Seven (7) years of experience on a mix of projects such as interstate widening, bridges, paving, soils, or heavy equipment.
  • VDOT transportation project experience preferred.
Certifications Required (Active Throughout Contract)
  • Soil and Aggregate Compaction – NICET LevelII.
  • Asphalt Field LevelI.
  • Asphalt Field LevelII.
  • Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field – ACI Concrete Field LevelI, or WACEL ConcreteI, or NICET LevelII.
  • Pavement Marking.
  • GRIT (Guardrail Certification).
  • Virginia DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection Certification.
  • Virginia DEQ Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification.
  • Nuclear Gauge Safety Training – Nuclear Regulatory Commission recognized provider.
  • Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control – VDOT approved provider.
  • 10‑Hour OSHA Safety Training.
