Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Senior Construction Inspector performs detailed inspections of large, multi-disciplined public works and infrastructure construction and maintenance projects. They integrate plans, details, and specifications to ensure construction and contract compliance, prepare project inspection reports, and perform related duties as assigned. Senior Construction Inspectors may oversee the work of one or more Construction Inspectors.

The Senior Construction Inspector role is distinguished from the Construction Inspector role by the expectation to perform more complex, multi-disciplinary inspections requiring greater knowledge of construction methods and specifications.

Note: We only consider candidates living locally or within the State of CA. We do not pay any relocation expenses.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Perform project inspections and/or act as supervising inspector on large construction projects; interpret and apply code requirements to assure compliance.
  2. Inspect installation of materials for compliance with plans, specifications, and codes.
  3. Respond to questions and complaints from the public.
  4. Confer with and provide information to developers, engineers, architects, property owners, contractors, and others regarding specifications, provisions, and City standards; resolve complaints and problems in consultation with project managers, as needed.
  5. Maintain construction inspection files and logs; prepare reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  6. Interact with contractors, engineers, architects, and others engaged in capital improvement projects, development projects, and encroachments regarding progress, scheduling, project problems, plan interpretation, specification interpretation, testing, and field measurements; coordinate the work of consultants for testing and special inspections.
  7. Coordinate inspection and construction-related activities with contractors and utility companies, and schedule necessary related inspections.
  8. Make written recommendations about progress payments, contract change orders, and as-built plans.
  9. Review specifications and submittal requirements in construction contracts and inspect for compliance with all provisions and requirements; inspect for compliance with Cal OSHA safety requirements and contractors’ approved safety plans; inspect stormwater pollution plans and development projects to ensure compliance with specific plans and specifications.
  10. Respond to constructability review requests from engineering staff to review and comment on plans, specifications, and construction methods for upcoming projects.
  11. Drive to and visit job sites and clients.
  12. Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct experience in the construction industry.
  • Increasing responsibility related to construction inspection.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class “C” California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Exposure to various infrastructure project types, including paving and linear underground work.
  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to work with personnel at all levels of development activity: public/private; contractors/workers.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and provide solutions.
KNOWLEDGE OF
  • Caltrans standard plans and specifications, construction manual, procedures, and LAPM.
  • Greenbook specifications.
  • Engineering, surveying, construction and drafting concepts, construction equipment, and related instruments.
  • Construction materials, principles, practices, procedures, and techniques.
  • Engineering measurements, scales, calculations, and estimates.
  • Interpersonal/public communication techniques.
  • Regulatory codes, laws, statutes, and ordinances governing construction projects per federal, state, county, and city regulations.
  • Computer application use and protocol.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work productively independently or in a team environment.
  • Occasional overtime work required throughout the year.
  • Require walking, bending, sitting, and physical flexibility including standing, bending, stooping, reaching, crouching, and climbing.
  • May require lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • May involve working in a fast-paced environment with deadlines and multiple projects.
  • May require standing and walking for long periods.
  • Work involves detailed documents and on-site inspections.
PAY AND BENEFITS

We offer competitive pay and benefits, well-being programs, and development resources. The compensation for this position is $70.00 to $80.00 per hour for prevailing wage projects, and $53.00 to $69.00 per hour for non-prevailing projects. Exact salary may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
