Job summary

BL Companies is seeking a Senior Construction Inspector to join our CEI team for CTDOT highway and bridge projects and municipal improvements.

The role involves overseeing field inspection activities, ensuring contract compliance, and serving as a liaison between client, contractor, and project team. Candidates must travel to sites daily and work in field conditions as needed.

Qualifications

• Minimum 4+ years of construction inspection experience on roadway/bridge/utilities.
• Strong knowledge of CTDOT specifications, procedures, and documentation requirements.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple field responsibilities.
• Excellent communication and organization skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform or oversee daily inspection of construction activities to ensure compliance with plans and standards.
• Monitor contractor operations including subcontractors and utilities to meet project requirements and schedules.
• Prepare detailed daily reports on work activities, labor, equipment, and quantities.
• Verify pay quantities and maintain records for project documentation and payments.
• Coordinate with Project Engineers, Resident Engineers, clients, and third-party testing firms.
• Observe and document material deliveries, sampling, and testing to ensure specifications compliance.
• Identify and report non-conforming work and assist in resolution with the project team.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards and project-specific safety requirements.
• Attend project meetings and support communication among stakeholders.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior inspection staff.

Job description

BL Companies is seeking a qualified Senior Construction Inspector to join our growing Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) team. This position will support CTDOT highway and bridge projects, state-funded municipal improvements, and select private-sector assignments.

The Senior Construction Inspector will be responsible for overseeing field inspection activities, ensuring compliance with contract documents, and serving as a key liaison between the client, contractor, and project team.

This position requires the ability to lift and carry materials as needed and to spend significant time working in the field. Candidates should be comfortable with frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and other physical activities associated with fieldwork.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform and/or oversee daily inspection of construction activities to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and applicable standards
• Monitor contractor operations, including subcontractors and utility work, to ensure adherence to project requirements and schedules
• Prepare detailed daily reports, including work activities, labor, equipment, and quantities in accordance with CTDOT recordkeeping procedures
• Verify and document pay quantities and maintain accurate records for project documentation and payment purposes
• Coordinate with Project Engineers, Resident Engineers, clients, and third-party testing firms
• Observe and document material deliveries, sampling, and testing to ensure compliance with specifications
• Identify and report non-conforming work and assist in resolution with the project team

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 4+ years of construction inspection experience on roadway, bridge, or utility infrastructure projects
• Strong working knowledge of CTDOT specifications, procedures, and documentation requirements
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities in a field environment
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites daily

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science (BS) in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
• NICET Level III or higher in Transportation Construction Inspection (TCI)

Preferred Certifications

• ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I
• NETTCP HMA Paving Inspector
• ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS)
• AWS Certified Welding Inspector
