Senior Civil Engineer

Ann Arbor, Detroit, Farmington Hills, MI

Fishbeck is seeking a full‑time Senior Civil Engineer to work in our southeast Michigan offices. The primary duty is to administer and oversee construction for client projects of varying size and scope. The role requires self‑motivation, commitment to high‑quality work, excellent planning and communication skills, the ability to work with clients and the public, and leadership of staff in a project team environment. Applicants must be willing to travel and work outdoors.

Responsibilities

• Administration and coordination of multiple municipal construction projects.
• Verify the contractor’s completed work is in compliance with the contract documents for each project.
• Lead and coordinate project meetings, including pre‑construction, progress, and public meetings, and distribute meeting minutes.
• Supervise engineers and technicians performing inspection, administration, and documentation for infrastructure projects from pre‑bid meeting to contract close‑out.
• Oversee the generation of all project pay estimates, contract modifications, work orders, and other generated documents.
• Review work produced by the project oversight team in both the office and the field and verify the acceptability of the generated documents.
• Provide technical leadership for complex or unique assignments.
• Provide guidance and training to inspection staff.
• Read and interpret complex contract documents and determine appropriate solutions to unforeseen project issues.
• Monitor activities of assigned staff for conformance with contractual requirements.
• Communicate effectively with staff, local agencies, and the general public.
• Effectively communicate project status and issues to client and formulate viable solutions.
• Review and draft responses to contractor’s correspondence and claims as required.
• Monitor project budgets, proactively identify issues, and communicate them to clients along with recommended corrective actions.
• Assist with business development and growth efforts.
• Manage internal project services contract budgets.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of municipal construction experience.
• Experience with the City of Detroit, Detroit Water & Sewerage Department, Great Lakes Water Authority, or Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne Counties is preferred; Michigan Department of Transportation experience is a plus.
• Prior experience as a Project Engineer or Assistant Project Engineer performing oversight and administration for underground utility, road, and/or bridge construction projects.
• Strong project management skills to manage projects ranging from local streets to complex urban freeways and structures.
• Strong teamwork and leadership capabilities.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and sit as needed on project sites.
• Ability to drive a motor vehicle to reach work sites and maneuver sites with uneven terrain.
• Ability to read printed materials and computer screens; hearing and speech to communicate.
