Job summary

BWX Technologies, Inc. is seeking an R&D Nuclear Engineer specializing in Computational Materials to advance high‑fidelity multiphysics simulations for nuclear fuel systems.

You will develop physics‑based material models and lead design, qualification, and optimization within BWXT’s software tools. The role requires deep materials science expertise, thermo‑mechanical and irradiation modelling, and strong programming skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering or Physics required.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience; advanced degree may substitute.
  • Experience with multiphysics modeling, FEA, or computational materials science.
  • Deep understanding of nuclear fuel materials behavior including thermo-mechanical, irradiation and chemical interactions.
  • Proficiency in FORTRAN, Python, C, C++ or similar.
  • U.S. citizen and ability to obtain/maintain DOE/DOD security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of advanced multiphysics models for nuclear fuel performance.
  • Develop constitutive models for fuel materials and microstructure evolution.
  • Perform high-fidelity analyses under various operating conditions.
  • Lead verification, validation, benchmarking, and uncertainty quantification.
  • Build scalable HPC methodologies and integrate modeling across workflows.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers and software developers.
  • Prepare technical documentation and regulatory deliverables.
  • Mentor junior staff and guide long-term modeling initiatives.
