Sargent & Lundy seeks a mid-level Component Qualification Engineer to join the Nuclear Power Group in Chicago. You will collaborate with a team of engineers and guide junior team members on projects for new facilities and upgrades.

You will apply seismic qualification knowledge, perform structural analysis, review reports, and assist with drawings and specifications. Some travel to sites may be required; strong communication and FEA tool proficiency are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering with emphasis in Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Five or more years of experience related to component qualification activities in the nuclear power plant industry.
  • Proficiency with structural mechanics analysis using Mathcad.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis using SAP2000, ANSYS, STAAD, and STRUDL.
  • Familiarity with AISC, AISI, ASCE, ANSI and ASTM codes.
  • Familiarity with Regulatory Guides and IEEE Standards for Seismic Qualification.
  • Proficiency with MS Office.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • MSCE or MSME degree (valued).
  • PE license (valued).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review design calculations and analyze components for seismic qualification.
  • Review test/analysis qualification reports from vendors and develop specifications.
  • Support designers with drawing development and revise client design basis documents.
  • Perform structural analysis of panels, connections, and foundations, including seismic effects.
  • Travel to client/vendor offices or plant sites for reviews and field verification.

Job description

Responsibilities

This is a mid-level engineering position that offers a variety of interesting and challenging opportunities in component qualification engineering and will provide an excellent opportunity to advance your career. You will collaborate with a team including other component qualification engineers, interface with engineers from other disciplines, and guide the work of less experienced project team members.

You will work with an engineering team on projects for new nuclear facilities and upgrades and modifications to nuclear power plants in the following areas:

  • This position will offer you the ability to directly apply your knowledge of component seismic qualification, structural mechanics, foundation load and component mounting analysis, and ASME Code calculations for Section III and Section VIII vessels, valves and pumps.
  • As a member of an engineering team, you will work on a wide range of projects for various clients. You will prepare and review design calculations, review test/analysis qualification reports from vendors, develop specifications, revise client design basis documents and support designers with drawing development
  • Perform the structural analysis and design of steel panels/cabinets, connections, equipment foundation loads and equipment supports, including the effects from seismic loads
  • Perform Seismic Qualification activities involving review of seismic test reports and preparation/review of analyses which include seismic loading
  • There is the potential for travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in engineering degree with emphasis in Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Five (5) or more years of experience related to component qualification activities in the nuclear power plant industry
  • Proficiency with structural mechanics analysis using Mathcad software
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis using software such as SAP2000, ANSYS, STAAD, and/or STRUDL
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as AISC, AISI, ASCE, ANSI and ASTM
  • Familiarity with Regulatory Guides and IEEE Standards associated with Seismic Qualification
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Good written and verbal communication skills

Valued, but not required:

  • MSCE or MSME degree
  • PE license

$84,762.21 - $129,497.82
