Job summary

Houston Dose is seeking a Senior Component Processing Technician to join the MD Anderson Cancer Center Donor Operations team in Houston, Texas. In this role, you'll lead the component processing laboratory to ensure high-quality blood product production and compliance with regulations.

The ideal candidate has experience in blood banking and should demonstrate strong technical skills and attention to detail. Responsibilities include training staff and supporting continuous improvement initiatives in a fast-paced environment.

Job description

Join the MD Anderson Cancer Center Donor Operations team and play a critical role in ensuring the safe production and distribution of blood products that directly support patient care. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced laboratory or blood banking professional who enjoys combining technical expertise with leadership responsibilities in a highly regulated manufacturing environment.

The Senior Component Processing Technician serves as a lead resource within the component processing laboratory, helping oversee daily workflow while ensuring the production of high-quality blood and blood components. Responsibilities include manufacturing whole blood into components, storing and distributing blood products, monitoring production processes, performing quality control activities, maintaining manufacturing records, and ensuring compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), FDA, AABB, and departmental requirements. This role also partners closely with supervisors and coordinators to support specialty product manufacturing and maintain efficient laboratory operations.

The ideal candidate will have experience in blood banking, component processing, laboratory manufacturing, biologics production, or another regulated healthcare or laboratory environment. Candidates should demonstrate strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of quality systems, documentation requirements, and regulatory compliance. Experience troubleshooting processes, maintaining laboratory equipment, and supporting quality assurance activities is highly desirable.

A key aspect of this role involves providing leadership and mentorship to other team members. Responsibilities include training laboratory technicians, conducting competency assessments, monitoring workflow and productivity, coaching staff on procedures and best practices, and serving as a technical resource for the team. Candidates should be comfortable leading by example, assisting with problem resolution, and supporting continuous process improvement initiatives.

On rotating weekdays, the shift is either 6:30 am – 5:00 pm or 8:00 pm – 6:30 pm. On weekends, it is 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Job Specific Competencies
  • Performs training and competency of laboratory technicians
  • Coordinates laboratory technician's workflow ensuring production of required blood and blood components
  • Monitors component production processes by directly observing staff
  • Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations.
  • Manufactures whole blood into components in accordance with current good manufacturing practices and departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Follows the guidance of the supervisor
  • Properly stores and distributes blood and blood components
  • Operate, maintain and perform quality control on equipment
  • Maintain accurate, legible and complete manufacturing records
  • Properly quarantine and dispose of unsuitable blood and blood components
  • Ensure the required monthly blood product quality control is performed to ensure manufacturing process is in control
  • Works with supervisors and coordinators in the production of specialty products
  • Acquires and maintains proficiency in computer functions
  • Independently performs work without undue reliance on others and assists co‑workers as time permits
  • Keeps abreast of new procedures and policies
  • Performs and documents all required quality control/quality assurance
  • Maintains neat, accurate and complete records according to established policies and procedures
  • Readily instructs new personnel and students regarding theories, techniques, and processes
  • Complies and enforces all safety policies and procedures and uses applicable protective equipment at all times
  • Prioritizes and organizes workflow meeting productivity goals of the section
  • Remains knowledgeable of processes and procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting and problem solving
  • Assists with monitoring and documenting of the sections inventory control system while assuring effective use of supplies
  • Complies with section's telephone courtesy policies and procedures
  • Reports results of problem resolutions to callers in accordance with section's policies
  • Demonstrates cooperation when working with both internal and external customers
  • Demonstrates calmness under varying environmental circumstances; remains willing and capable of assisting with crisis situations
  • Maintains good attendance and punctuality per the absence policy
  • Consistently well groomed; maintains a high standard of personal hygiene; adheres to the section/divisional dress code.
Education
  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree
Work Experience
  • Required: 2 years Donor center experience to include six months in a component manufacturing laboratory or
  • with preferred degree, no experience required.
