Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in communications or related field.
  • Four years of administrative experience and social media/website familiarity.
  • Four years videography experience desired.
  • Five years’ experience with tribal organizations preferred.
  • Knowledge of tribal sovereignty and Mille Lacs Band treaty rights.
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, grammar, and clarity.

Responsibilities

  • Produce video content for all Band departments, including the Chief Executive and officials.
  • Produce multimedia displays and audiovisuals; write/edit text or scripts; procure visuals and music.
  • Capture homepage video content with a storytelling focus for website and social media.
  • Assist the Director and Inaajimowin Editor with monthly Band newsletter production.
  • Update the Band’s website and Facebook page with community information.
  • Attend and photograph events; provide written summaries as needed.
  • Coordinate public relations and government relations events and meetings.

JOB TYPE: Full Time

SALARY RANGE: $67,000 to $118,000

SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to provide communications strategies and solutions for the Band by managing the Band’s website, create content for the Band’s social media platforms and Band wide text alert system. In addition, the position will assist with the development informational videos, podcasts, and documentaries, this position will help the Government Affairs team in achieving its communications and public policy goals through managing and keeping the communities of the Mille Lacs Band informed of programmatic offerings, community events and other general information. This position will also provide writing support for Band publications and other communications tools.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, public administration, computer science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Four (4) years of prior administrative experience and familiarity with social media content creation and website platforms required.
  • Four (4) years prior videography experience including content creation, recording, editing is desired.
  • Four (4) years prior podcast experience desired.
  • Five (5) years’ experience working for a tribal organization is preferred.
  • Knowledge of tribal sovereignty and Mille Lacs Band treaty rights.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills with strong attention to grammar, clarity, accuracy, and style.
  • In-depth knowledge of best writing and messaging practices for business correspondence, public relations, and social media.
  • Strong copywriting and storytelling skills with the ability to produce clear, accurate, and engaging content for publications, websites, social media, scripts, and other communications platforms.
  • Collaborate with other teams to help develop and maintain the public voice of the Band.
  • Write letters, interdepartmental memos and other business correspondence.
  • Perform communications research and assist in translating complex information into clear, accessible communications for diverse audiences integrating various communications strategies.
  • Understanding of crisis media management.
  • Digital photography and/or photo editing skills preferred.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Must have current valid driver’s license.
  • Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Produce video content for all Band departments, including the Chief Executive, elected and appointed officials.
  • Produce multimedia displays and audiovisuals for Mille Lacs Band to use. Write/edit text or script; procure visuals, music, narrators; obtain necessary permissions; coordinate production, and produce videos.
  • Capture homepage video content with a storytelling focus. This includes, but is not limited to, interviewing compelling sources in the field, integrating text and graphic overlays for standalone videos as well as delivering videos specifically for the Mille Lacs Band website and social media platforms.
  • Assist the Director and Inaajimowin Editor with the monthly production of the Band’s newsletter.
  • Assist the Government Affairs team by updating the Band’s website and Band’s Facebook page with information for the communities of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.
  • Attend and photograph and/or record video of events and provide written summaries as needed.
  • Assist in organizing and coordinating public relations and government relations events and meetings related to issues of importance to the Mille Lacs Band.
  • Assist public relations consultant with PR activities in coordination with government relations efforts.
  • Assist with the organization and coordination of Band grassroots activities.
  • Assist Government Affairs with organization and coordination of internal and external communications.
  • Manage the Band’s text alert system.
  • Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is primarily in doors in a controlled climate area.
  • Hours are typically 8-5, but extra hours may be necessary to meet deadlines and maintain workload. May involve some evening or weekend working.
  • Local and out of state travel is required.
