Job summary

Collins Machine Works in Portsmouth, VA is seeking an experienced CNC Programmer to design and troubleshoot programs for large-part machining, including ship propeller shafting and steering gear components.

You will study drawings, write and refine CNC programs, prepare fixtures, and verify tolerances with precision measuring tools. The ideal candidate has solid CNC programming background and strong math skills.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; 3–5 years related experience preferred.
• Strong English communication; ability to interpret complex instructions.
• Experience reading blueprints and interpreting technical drawings.
• Ability to work independently or in a team to troubleshoot quickly.

Responsibilities

• Study drawings to design/modify CNC programs for customer specs.
• Program and troubleshoot CNC machines and guide operators.
• Assist with machine setup and prove NC programs.
• Select and align fixtures/tools, ensuring safe operation.
• Use gauges to verify tolerances and monitor machining.
• Track parts/jobs in JobBOSS/Travelers and maintain clean environment.
• Work overtime as needed and communicate across plant teams.
