If you are a degreed CNC machinist looking to step away from rigid, micromanaged job shops where operators are treated like basic "button pushers," this senior-track seat is built for you. Our client is a premier, privately held manufacturer specializing in high-performance heavy equipment and specialized industrial work tools. Built on a strong culture of safety, technical autonomy, and internal advancement, this organization treats its machinists as true craftsmen. Working on complex, low-volume setups for heavy-duty structural builds, you will take ownership of large-scale milling centers while partnering directly with engineering and fabrication teams to refine manufacturing processes.
What You Will Be Doing (Daily Responsibilities)
- Execute Complex Setups: Perform independent tool and fixture setups and advanced operations on large-scale CNC milling centers, lathes, and multi-axis machinery.
- Controller-Level Optimization: Edit G&M code directly at the machine controller and optimize tool paths to machine precision parts from high-strength steel alloys.
- Blueprint & GD&T Interpretation: Analyze complex engineering drawings to establish operational sequences and verify strict geometric tolerances.
- Precision Metrology: Utilize specialized measuring tools (bore gauges, depth micrometers, calipers) to perform thorough quality checks and maintain 100% part conformance.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with welding, fabrication, and design engineering teams to solve setup roadblocks and shorten cycle times.
- Asset Care & Safety: Maintain a clean, organized 5S workstation while upholding safety-first standards and routine preventative maintenance.
What We Are Looking For (Requirements & Qualifications)
- Educational Background: 2-Year Technical Diploma or Associate Degree in CNC Machining / Machine Tool Technology required.
- Large Machining Expertise: Verified professional experience setting up large milling centers and executing close-tolerance work on massive, complex workpieces.
- G-Code & Controller Fluency: Deep technical capability editing G&M codes at the control panel, using MDI, and reading GD&T engineering prints.
- Analytical Problem-Solving: Ability to evaluate tool wear on active runs, calculate feed/speed parameters, and troubleshoot unproven program paths on the fly.
- Location & Authorization: U.S. Citizenship or Green Card holder residing within a comfortable daily driving distance of Greater Duluth, MN.
Preferred Technical Assets (Bonus Skills)
- Multi-Axis Experience: Hands-on setup capability with 5-axis milling centers or multi-spindle, live-tooling CNC turning centers.
- Heavy Equipment Industry: Prior experience machining high-strength castings, weldments, or forgings for heavy machinery OEMs.
- Mastercam / CAM Software: Familiarity with Mastercam or offline CAM programming software concepts.
