Job summary

Western Governors University is seeking a Staff Cloud Engineer in Salt Lake City to drive the architecture, automation, and evolution of our AWS cloud platform. You will lead enterprise-scale environments, define infrastructure roadmaps, and mentor engineers across multiple teams.

The role emphasizes hands-on technical leadership rather than people management, with a focus on secure-by-design cloud architectures and scalable, observable systems across university services.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
• 10+ years designing, building, and supporting enterprise infrastructure/cloud platforms.
• 5+ years hands-on AWS engineering experience for large-scale production.
• Extensive experience with Terraform and IaC.
• Strong Linux systems administration experience.
• Experience building and operating enterprise CI/CD platforms.
• Strong programming/scripting (Python/Go/Bash).
• Mentor engineers and lead technical deliverables across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture and implementation of enterprise AWS cloud platforms for university systems.
• Define long-term cloud roadmaps for scalability, security, and cost optimization.
• Architect and maintain IaC with Terraform and automation practices.
• Build highly available multi-account AWS environments following Well-Architected Framework.
• Develop enterprise CI/CD platforms enabling secure automated delivery.
• Mentor engineers and drive technical leadership across teams.
• Collaborate with cybersecurity for secure-by-design architectures.
• Lead performance optimization, DR planning, and resiliency efforts.
