General Summary

  • Provide autonomous wound care, consulting and individualizing patient care aligned with UM Rehab & Ortho’s mission, standards, and patient needs, considering age, culture, ethnicity, spirituality, and individual diagnostics. Develop and implement comprehensive wound care plans using evidence-based practices.
  • Act as a specialized resource within the interdisciplinary team, identifying and implementing cost-effective strategies to optimize outcomes.
  • Assess and interpret patient data to identify needs and deliver appropriate care.
  • Demonstrate compassion and courtesy toward patients and support their families and visitors.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Support development of the Wound Champion role.
  • Conduct wound care rounds on inpatient units as needed.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in electronic or paper records, including training on documentation standards.
  • Guide staff in wound management to promote healing, including skin assessments, risk factor identification, and implementing preventive strategies. Coordinate nutrition and consultative services as needed.
  • Foster team collaboration, delegate tasks appropriately, and promote professional growth. Use conflict resolution and time management skills.
  • Manage Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), including device operation, clinical care, and mentorship.
  • Assess, stage, and treat pressure injuries, utilizing NPUAP guidelines, and participate in quality surveys and data collection.
  • Provide wound and skin care consultations, including documentation, teaching, and product recommendations.
  • Implement strategies for ostomy and fistula management, including patient and staff education.

  • Provide specialized wound care respectful of individual patient needs.
  • Demonstrate respect, compassion, and courtesy at all times.
  • Serve as a wound care expert within the team, mentoring staff and ensuring effective communication.

  • Exhibit high clinical competency and critical thinking.
  • Support organizational goals and participate in problem-solving initiatives.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and coordinate patient education.
  • Recommend treatment modalities and participate in protocol development.
  • Participate in quality initiatives, safety practices, and technology evaluations to improve care and reduce costs.

Education & Research

  • Maintain competency and participate in education and research activities.
  • Support the growth of wound care staff and participate in clinical research.

Education & Experience

  • RN licensure in Maryland required.
  • Current CPR card required.
  • Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN) certification required.
  • Graduate of an accredited RN program; BSN preferred.
  • At least 2 years of nursing experience, with wound/ostomy or rehabilitation preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and serve as a clinical resource.
  • Proficiency in computer systems for managing patient information.
  • Knowledge of wound care agents, skin assessment, continence care, nutrition, and prevention strategies.
