Senior Clinical Fellow - Anaesthetics & ITU

The Anaesthetic department provides services to three sites -Worcestershire Royal Hospital (WRH), Alexandra Hospital Redditch (AHR), andKidderminster Treatment Centre (KTC), encompassing all major specialities witha strong countywide working ethos.Recent surgical reconfiguration means most elective surgery willbe delivered on the Alexandra Hospital site, while the majority of emergency,trauma and obstetric work will be on the WRH site. KTC functions as a day-caseand short-stay surgical unit. Applicants will be required to contribute to theTheatres, Obstetric and WRH/Alex Intensive Care rotas.

All candidates must have completed 4 years full time equivalentpostgraduate training, with at least 2 years in anaesthesia/ICM as per thestandard Specialty Doctor terms and conditions.

The Intensive Care service provides countywide support to two IntensiveCare Units a 15 bedded unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and an 8 beddedunit at the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch. The service is funded to 15 levelthree equivalent beds which are staffed flexibly across the county depending onneed. Between them, they admit approximately 900 patients per annum

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join a friendly and supportive directorate and willhelp to provide a wide range of both anaesthetic and critical care services, aswell as enjoying the opportunity to pursue special interests outside of theirclinical work. The directorate currently provides anaesthetic services inWorcester, Redditch and Kidderminster.

Out of hours responsibilities will rotate around both Worcesterand Redditch. At both the Alexandra Hospital & Worcestershire Royal Hospitalthe out of hours resident staff cover is based on a 1 in 8 frequency requestrota including prospective cover.

Person Specification
Experience
  • Completed at least four years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on part time basis) or have equivalent experience and competencies at least two of which will be in a training programme in Anaesthetics or Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required at CT/ST3 level in relevant specialty. Equivalent years experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Minimum 3 months training in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Critical care on call experience
  • Initial assessment of competency (IAC) certificate in basic anaesthesia AND obstetric anaesthesia (or equivalent)
  • Ability to offer clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, within specialty and sufficient experience.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Previous experience working in the NHS within the specialty of minimum of 12 months.
  • Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making.
  • Recent experience working in critical care
Qualifications
  • Eligible for full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Satisfactory completion of ST1-2 training, or equivalent.
  • Membership examination with the relevant UK Royal College.
  • ALS Certification.
  • ATLS Certification.
  • Attendance at recognised management courses.
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education.
  • Primary FRCA or equivalent
  • ALS/EPALS
Teaching Experience
  • Ability to organise and deliver teaching across the whole undergraduate curriculum.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines.
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation and completion of audit projects.
  • Critical appraisal skills.
Research Experience
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
  • An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives.
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years.
