Job summary

The State of Florida’s Department of Corrections is seeking a Senior Classification Officer to manage inmates via a collaborative case-management approach. You will prepare inmate management plans, evaluate progress, and make special status recommendations, ensuring accurate records in the offender database system.

A two-year Classification Officer background is required; preferred candidates understand custody procedures, disciplinary processes, and inmate movement.

  • Supervise and evaluate inmate progress, preparing detailed progress reports and making special status recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate inmate information in the department’s offender database system and evaluate gain time awards.
  • Assist in training new classification staff, support the Classification Supervisor with administrative functions, and manage a Release officer caseload.

This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service position located at Central Florida Reception Center in the Classification department.

The Classification Department accurately assesses and classifies inmates based on their needs, risks, and behaviors. We ensure appropriate housing and program placements within the correctional system. Our goal is to enhance safety and security while promoting effective rehabilitation, ultimately aiding in the successful reintegration of inmates into society.

This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must possess two (2) years of Classification Officer experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications:

  • Experience with file audit and custody procedures.
  • Possess a working knowledge of disciplinary processes
  • Capability to handle large volumes of inmate change and movement.

Support of knowledge, skills, and abilities should be demonstrated on the application, in the education, in the work experience, in the work sample, in the interview and/or during reference checks.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

BACKGROUND SCREENING REQUIREMENT

The Florida Department of Corrections requires all job applicants and volunteers to pass a Level 2 background check as per Chapter 435, Florida Statutes. This check must be completed before they can start working or volunteering.
