Job summary

Markel in New Jersey is seeking an experienced professional to manage mid-to-high complexity casualty and environmental claims, from coverage inquiry through liability assessment and quantum analysis. You will direct defense teams, negotiate settlements, monitor reserves, and collaborate with underwriting and risk management.

JD or equivalent preferred; 4–6 years’ complex claims handling. This role offers exposure to litigation, mediation, and regulatory compliance within a Fortune 500 insurer

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; JD or advanced degree preferred.
  • 4–6 years of complex casualty claims handling experience.
  • Strong knowledge of coverage analysis and interpretation of specialty insurance policies.
  • Experience managing litigated claims and working with outside counsel.
  • Ability to evaluate liability, damages, and claim exposure in moderate to high-severity matters.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of environmental, products liability, life sciences, toxic tort, professional liability, and general liability claims of moderate to high complexity.
  • Analyze policy language and coverage issues, including reservation of rights letters, DISCLAIMERS, and coverage position recommendations.
  • Evaluate liability, damages, and exposure to establish and maintain appropriate claim reserves.
  • Direct and oversee defense counsel, coverage counsel, consultants, and experts as appropriate.
  • Develop and execute claim handling strategies to drive timely, efficient, and appropriate claim outcomes.
  • Conduct coverage investigations and assess potential coverage defenses and indemnity obligations.
  • Participate in mediations, settlement conferences, and other alternative dispute resolution proceedings.
  • Negotiate settlements within granted authority and present settlement recommendations for higher authority review when required.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, product development, and risk management teams on claim trends and emerging issues.
  • Prepare clear claim summaries, large loss reports, and management updates.
  • Monitor litigation budgets and ensure adherence to litigation management guidelines.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and company claim handling standards.
  • Support broker, underwriting, and insured communications as needed.

This position will be responsible for the resolution of moderate to high complexity and moderate to high exposure claims which can be subject to disputes that must be resolved in mediation or litigation. The primary purpose of this job is to handle claims from coverage enquiry through legal liability assessment (where relevant) and quantum analysis, to timely and accurate resolution; ensuring mitigation of indemnity and expense exposure while communicating developments and outcomes as necessary to all internal and external stakeholders. The position will have increased responsibility for decision making within their authority and work with minimal oversight and will provide training and be a technical referral point for other team members.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; Juris Doctor (JD) or other advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 4-6 years of complex casualty claims handling experience.
  • Strong knowledge of coverage analysis and interpretation of specialty insurance policies.
  • Experience managing litigated claims and working with outside counsel.
  • Ability to evaluate liability, damages, and claim exposure in moderate to high-severity matters.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to draft coverage letters and claim reports.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and exercise independent judgment within designated authority levels.
  • Experience handling claims involving multiple parties, contractual indemnity issues, additional insured exposures, and complex insurance programs is preferred.
  • Professional designations such as CPCU, AIC, SCLA, or equivalent are a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency with claims management systems and Microsoft Office applications.

Pay Information

The salary range for this position is $78,000 - $134,090. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting. This position may also be eligible to participate in the Company's annual incentive plan.
