Job summary

The Roger Baldwin Foundation of the ACLU of Illinois seeks a Senior Supervising Attorney to build and lead a litigation program and, in collaboration with other Departments, contribute to non-litigation advocacy to drive transformational change across our program areas.

Based in Chicago with a hybrid in-office/remote schedule, this exempt management role requires mentoring attorneys, coordinating with partners, and public representation when needed.

Qualifications

• J.D. and IL bar admission or eligible to waive into the Illinois bar.
• At least 10 years of litigation experience in state and federal courts.
• Ability to conceive and litigate cases to conclusion with evidentiary proceedings and discovery.
• Excellent persuasive writing for court filings and communications.
• Ability to speak clearly and persuasively with diverse individuals in legal and non-legal settings.
• Strong legal aptitude and ability to address novel, complex questions.
• Willingness to travel across Illinois and work beyond hours when needed.

Responsibilities

• Investigate, develop, and advance high-impact cases at trial and appellate levels.
• Coordinate with other Departments to develop non-litigation strategies for civil rights.
• Build collaborative relationships with counsel, allied orgs, communities, and members.
• Supervise, mentor, and evaluate early- to mid-career attorneys.
• Serve as an ACLU-IL spokesperson with media and external partners.
