Senior Civil Design Engineer / Group Leader - Freight Rail Team

David Evans and Associates Inc (DEA's) Transit and Rail Group is seeking a Senior Civil Design Engineer / Group Leader to join our Freight Rail Team. This role can be based in our offices in Dallas/Fort Worth or College Station, TX. The ideal candidate will be a motivated leader with extensive experience and technical expertise in multi-disciplinary rail projects. You will lead a team in transforming innovative concepts into detailed construction drawings and technical specifications, contributing to sustainable transportation solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Technical Leadership: Lead design efforts and provide expertise on railroad and civil engineering projects, including utilities, grading, drainage, erosion control, roadway, site development, terminal, and track design. Ensure all project phases comply with standards, codes, and regulations, from feasibility to construction, including procurement and bid support.
  2. Construction Documentation: Prepare and review detailed construction plans, technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates using Bentley OpenRail Designer or MicroStation.
  3. Project Management & Collaboration: Manage projects to deliver high-quality results on time and within budget, collaborating effectively with teams and stakeholders.
  4. Quality Assurance: Conduct technical reviews and ensure adherence to quality procedures throughout the project lifecycle.
  5. Site Engagement: Lead or participate in project meetings, site visits, and inspections to ensure project alignment with design and client goals.
  6. Post-Design Support: Provide construction support, address RFIs, review submittals, and assist with as-built documentation and field observations.
  7. Coordination: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and resolve design issues proactively to maintain positive client and team relationships.
  8. Business Development: Participate in marketing, project planning, and resource allocation for current and future projects.
  9. Leadership & Mentoring: Manage and mentor junior engineers and project managers to foster professional growth.
  10. Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • At least 10 years of civil engineering design experience, with a focus on freight rail land development.
  • Experience with railroad engineering standards and design guidelines.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to travel periodically for client visits and project work.
  • Experience with projects for BNSF, UPRR, CPKC, NS, or similar.
  • Proven success in project delivery and business development.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and communication tools.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to supervise and organize a team of professionals and technicians.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil3D, MicroStation, and Open Roads.
  • Location near Texas clients or within Texas preferred.
  • Strong client relationship skills and recognized technical expertise.
