Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking an experienced Principal Attorney to perform complex professional legal duties for the city, such as preparing complex and difficult cases for trial and providing legal assistance to executive-level leadership (e.g., City's council, department heads, boards).

This full-time role also involves legal research, advising staff, negotiating agreements, and participating in professional development.

Qualifications

Member of the Alabama State Bar in good standing.
Experience in litigation or transactional work handling complex legal issues.
Experience assigning and delegating work to administrative support staff.
Experience as the lead attorney in litigation or transactional matters.

Responsibilities

Represents the City, boards, agencies and employees in court, trials and appeals, safeguarding city goals and policies.
Investigates claims and complaints by or against the City and represents the city in litigation to minimize liability.
Drafts and reviews legal documents to protect the City’s position and guide decisions.
Ensures adherence to laws, codes and ordinances and provides legal advice to minimize liability.
Performs legal research and participates in professional development to maintain current knowledge.
Negotiates agreements such as claim settlements and contracts on behalf of the City.
Manages agency projects by setting goals, delegating tasks, and coordinating with outside parties.
