Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking an experienced Principal Attorney to perform complex professional legal duties for the city, including preparing complex cases for trial and providing legal assistance to executive-level leadership (e.g., City's council, department heads, boards).

The role involves legal research, negotiation of agreements, guidance on policy, and supervision of staff on litigation and transactional matters to protect the City’s interests.

Qualifications

• Member of the Alabama State Bar Association in good standing.
• Experience in litigation or transactional work handling complex legal issues (e.g., police misconduct, excessive use of force, workplace discrimination, personal injury, constitutional rights, reviewing/drafting agreements, real estate, government procurement).
• Experience assigning and delegating work to administrative support staff.
• Experience as the lead attorney in litigation or transactional matters.

Responsibilities

• Represents the City, boards, agencies, and employees in court and before boards and agencies, following laws and policies to protect the City’s position.
• Investigates claims against the City and prepares for litigation to minimize liability and loss.
• Drafts and reviews legal documents to guide decision-making and ensure compliance with laws.
• Conducts legal research and negotiates agreements (claims, contracts) on behalf of the City.
