Position: Senior Chemist Research and Development

Department: Research & Development Lab

Reporting Structure: Technical Director, Research & Development

Reporting to this position: No direct reports

BASIC FUNCTION: The development and formulation of new products based on client specifications and as per issued formulations from the Formulating Team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepare submissions of bench batches for client approvals based on prescribed formulations and product specifications.
2. Manage assignments and projects independently from inception to completion.
3. Manage multiple projects and meet deadlines via excellent time management skills and prioritization.
4. Compile and analyze test information to make improvements as needed to reach desired results. Recommend further action based on research data as changes to formulation.
5. Collect scientific data and communicate technical information to project managers.
6. Confer with formulators and provide recommendations to improve or customize formulas, processes, or analytical methods.
7. Ensure stability and efficacy according to project requirements. Issue product specifications as required and maintain relevant data throughout each product’s development.
8. Maintain accurate real-time entries on lab notebooks to ensure accuracy and completeness and associated electronic databases.
9. Analyze information and evaluate results to choose/recommend the best solution for solving problems.
10. Train and mentor lower-level chemist positions to promote active advancement. Provide training in the use of laboratory equipment.
11. Create and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as they relate to the Research and Development Laboratory.
12. Maintain adherence to cGMPs (current Good Manufacturing Procedures), GLPs (Good Laboratory Procedures), and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for the personal care industry.
13. Perform other related duties as assigned.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

1. Strong knowledge of chemistry and chemical interactions for personal care, hair care, and skin care products.
2. Strong mathematical aptitude.
3. Professional written and oral communication skills.
4. Computer literate in Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook.
5. Attention to detail and analytical thinking, ability to apply general concepts to specific problems to produce positive results.
6. Familiarity with laboratory equipment used in the process of creating bench batches.
7. Working knowledge and understanding of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field.
8. Exercise independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance with relation to matters of importance within the Research & Development company sector.
9. Good problem-solving and decision-making skills. Displays a sense of urgency and initiative with creativity and flexibility.
10. Able to work in a fast-paced environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing duties of the job, the employee is occasionally required to stand (for extended periods), stoop, bend, walk, and use hands to handle objects, tools, and controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee will be required to handle chemicals and solvents as required during the course of job execution. The employee may be required to move or lift objects up to 10 lbs.

EDUCATION / TRAINING:

1. Bachelor of Science or higher in Chemistry and/or a combination of vocational training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standards listed above and provides the required knowledge and skills.
2. A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in the personal care, hair care, and skin care industry. Eight (8) years in a Research and Development Chemist position.
