Job summary

Blue Current, Inc. operates in Hayward, California, advancing silicon solid-state batteries. We seek a Sr Cell Engineer to drive cell technology from early R&D through scaled production, working with scientists and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are manufacturable at scale.

You will own end-to-end project design, mentor junior engineers, and push for innovative solutions while maintaining safety and documentation standards across research, engineering, and manufacturing teams.

Qualifications

• PhD in a relevant field or MS with 3+ years or BS with 5+ years experience in batteries.
• Experience taking a cell design from laboratory scale through at least one scale-up stage (pilot or production).
• Hands-on experience with cell build unit operations (coating, calendering, slitting, stacking/winding, electrolyte/separator integration, sealing, formation).
• Experience designing and interpreting cell characterization studies (rate testing, EIS, cycle life).
• Ability to communicate across research, process engineering, quality, and operations.

Responsibilities

• Designs and executes hypothesis-driven experiments to understand and improve cell performance using analytical techniques (SEM, spectroscopy) and DOE.
• Leads root cause analysis on cell underperformance and drives design or process changes.
• Investigates material and interface failure modes and quantifies their impact on performance and yield.
• Directs cell characterization and post-mortem analysis in partnership with metrology.
• Leads new cell design introduction from small-format samples to pilot and production builds.
• Defines cell design requirements balancing performance, robustness, and process capability for scale-up.
