The North Carolina Department of Justice seeks an Attorney IV (NS) in Raleigh to handle capital direct appeals, post-conviction matters, and federal habeas corpus litigation for the State. This time-limited role may last up to 36 months and may require travel, including overnight stays, as needed.

The attorney will prepare briefs, present oral argument, and assist District Attorneys with capital prosecutions across NC trial and appellate courts.

Qualifikationen

• Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and four years of progressively responsible professional legal experience.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may apply as per the Education and Experience Equivalency Guide.
• Ability to handle direct capital appeals, post-conviction and federal habeas corpus litigation.

Aufgaben

• Direct Capital Appeals: Represent the State in direct appeals from death judgments, briefs, oral argument, and related proceedings in NC appellate courts.
• State Post-Conviction Litigation: Handle post-conviction proceedings, motions for appropriate relief, and collateral challenges in superior and appellate courts.
• Federal Habeas Corpus Litigation: Represent the State in federal habeas proceedings, including briefing, hearings, and appellate work; some travel is required.
