Job summary

NOAA Fisheries Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle seeks a Senior C++ Programmer to improve and maintain the COMPASS ecological model. You will develop features, resolve issues, optimize performance, and collaborate with NOAA scientists on ecology-focused software.

Responsibilities include completing the GUI, adding parameter controls, calibrating with telemetry data, and ensuring robust documentation and builds across Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Qualifications

  • Must have a degree in computer science or related field.
  • Must have at least 10 years of applied programming experience.
  • Strong C++ proficiency demonstrated via projects.
  • Experience with large, multi-module OO C++ applications.
  • Proficiency with C++17, Qt 6, Boost, and Git.
  • Ability to build, test, debug, and deploy software.
  • Experience creating Windows installer packages per NOAA process.
  • Good written and verbal communication with scientists and staff.
  • NOAA security screening and training completion required.
  • Ecology, fisheries, oceanography, or related fields preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete development of the COMPASS GUI.
  • Add controls to modify model parameters and environmental data.
  • Complete adult fish passage module for migration and dam passage.
  • Develop ecological functions for reservoir survival and travel time.
  • Calibrate model parameters with radio-telemetry and PIT-tag data.
  • Debug, test, and maintain ~230,000 lines of C++ code.
  • Create Windows builds while maintaining Linux/macOS compatibility.
  • Document work and provide evidence of correct results.
  • Support NOAA analyses related to salmon management and hydropower.
