Job description

Hi, we're Oscar. We're hiring a Senior Business Intelligence Engineer to join our Data team.

Oscar is the first health insurance company built around a full stack technology platform and a focus on serving our members. We started Oscar in 2012 to create the kind of health insurance company we would want for ourselves—one that behaves like a doctor in the family.

About the role

The Senior Business Intelligence Engineer will define and execute the technical vision and evolution of Oscar's business intelligence platform, which consists of Looker and DBT built on BigQuery. You will work hands-on with developers to improve all existing data visualization infrastructure, semantic layer systems, and oversee the supporting Python script infrastructure used for administration. You will assure our developers and end users get the necessary support needed to achieve their goals. This includes designing, documenting, and improving upon the architecture, CI/CD workflows, access paradigms and development best practices, while aligning with established Data Governance principles. You will influence our strategy of increasing user adoption and self-service.

You will report to the Associate Director, Analytics Engineering.

Work Location:

Oscar is a blended work culture where everyone, regardless of work type or location, feels connected to their teammates, our culture and our mission.

If you live within commutable distance to our New York City office (in Hudson Square), our Tempe office (off the 101 at University Dr), or our Los Angeles office (in Marina Del Rey), you will be expected to come into the office at least two days each week. Otherwise, this is a remote / work-from-home role.

You must reside in one of the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, or Washington, D.C. Note, this list of states is subject to change.

Pay Transparency:

The base pay for this role is: $144,000 - $189,000 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program, company equity grants, and annual performance bonuses.

Responsibilities
  • Champion development best practices for Looker development.
  • Scope CI/CD tools, automation, processes and guidelines to ensure adherence.
  • Level-up our existing dashboard infrastructure, partnering with developers to improve dashboard usability, visualization, and query performance.
  • Own the maintenance, optimization and expansion of our Business Intelligence platform (Looker) and LookML semantic layer.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to expand BI content areas, taking in stakeholder-defined business requirements, maintaining alignment, and delivering performant, scalable products that meet our end-user needs.
  • Lead cross-functional mid-to-long term projects focused on optimizing and scaling the business intelligence stack, ensuring its scale, performance, and ability to meet business needs. Oversee the administration and support duties necessary to service the developers and end users of our platform, finding opportunities to build tools and automation to reduce the amount of inbound requests.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding and expertise of Oscar's analytics technologies and tools, contributing to the continuous improvement of Oscar's analytics ecosystem.
  • Provide training and mentorship to empower data scientists and data engineers, cultivating a culture of excellence in business intelligence and fostering continuous skill development.
Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience in Analytics Engineering, Business Intelligence, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience working with a variety of database languages, including SQL, DDL and DML with demonstrated ability to efficiently transform data and databases.
  • 3+ years of experience developing in a semantic modeling language (e.g. LookML).
  • 3+ years of experience working with a variety of business intelligence platforms, such as Looker (preferred), Tableau, PowerBI, or others.
  • 2+ years of experience working with and presenting to non-technical stakeholders.
Bonus Points
  • Experience integrating DBT and Looker (or equivalent ETL-to-BI integration).
  • Experience with Python or another OOP/scripting language.
  • Experience working with healthcare data, analytics and reporting.
  • Experience with GCP.
  • A background in healthcare and/or insurance.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, as demonstrated by experience on at least 1 project or initiative requiring communication between technical and non-technical users.
