Amwins has expertise across a diversified mix of property, casualty, and group benefits products, and offers value-added services to support some of these products, including product development, underwriting, premium and claims administration and actuarial services.

Position Overview

The Senior Business Analyst role at Amwins provides support for our business and technology teams, partnering with these groups to deliver technology solutions that create efficiency, drive change, and improve business outcomes. This is a critical role supporting implementation of a new underwriting solution for Amwin’s Special Risk Underwriting (SRU) division. The Sr. Business Analyst will partner with internal and external stakeholders (including implementation partners) to elicit requirements, make recommendations, document processes, create user stories, support implementation, and drive the solution forward.

Responsibilities

  • Build a deep knowledge of the Amwins business model and supporting technology in order to effectively partner with Developers and Product Owners in the design and delivery of high-value solutions.
  • Become familiar with the Information Technology processes, tools, structures and solutions to effectively engage with a wide variety of team members in the mitigation of risk, opportunity identification, enhanced solution supportability and high-value solution delivery.
  • Become a subject matter expert within the SRU domain and, over time, serve as a trusted advisor to the team.
  • Partner with the Product Owner and business stakeholders to understand business needs, as well as the roadmap and priorities that support those needs.
  • Execute on initiatives that focus on new technology projects and process optimization; initiatives will require end-to-end engagement from initial assessment through recommendation and implementation.
  • Participate in design, understanding the big picture and developing solutions that effectively leverage technology to meet business needs. Serve as a champion for the end user.
  • Understand and document process flows for current, transition, and future states, identifying and analyzing gaps.
  • Utilize a wide variety of business analysis techniques to elicit and analyze requirements and decompose features into user stories.
  • Create/refine user stories, ensuring the product backlog is kept primed with 1-2 sprints’ worth of work.
  • Guide the definition of acceptance criteria; ensure criteria is clear, concise, complete, and testable. Understand how each requirement supports the delivery of business value.
  • Maintain a holistic view of the solution being delivered, ensuring the team understands how individual user stories fit into the bigger picture.
  • Support development work, clarifying requirements and conducting additional research as needed.
  • Test new features and facilitate user acceptance testing with stakeholders, serving as an early validation point and eliciting feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Document and maintain application knowledgebase and support materials / user guides.
  • Support rollout, including coordination of implementations, beta testing, training, demonstrations, etc.
  • Utilize a broad business and technology background to serve an informal leadership role on the team, ensuring clear and frequent communication is happening, the team is appropriately executing on the roadmap, and issues are identified and addressed early and successfully.

  • Negotiation Skills: Ability to consider all parties’ needs/interests/motivations, advocate for the end user, and encourage win/win outcomes
  • Facilitation Skills: Ability to effectively lead organized, focused, and productive discussions with clear outcomes
  • Elicitation Skills: Ability to ask deep questions of stakeholders and subject matter experts in order to understand business needs; ability to pull out the underlying need and the problem, and not just the desired solution
  • Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving: Ability to conduct analysis, identify if a solution will meet business needs, ensure solutions solve underlying problems, and make viable recommendations
  • Organizational Skills: Self-motivation, a sense of urgency, and the ability to plan work according to priorities and timelines
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt and respond to organizational changes, changing priorities, and evolving processes
  • Technical Literacy: Solid working knowledge of the software development lifecycle, application development concepts, APIs, and application of technology to solve business problems

Qualifications/Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in business analysis, product ownership, or a related discipline within Information Technology
  • 3+ years of experience writing user stories and managing the backlog as part of an agile team
  • Experience with underwriting and/or the P&C insurance industry a strong plus
  • Software quality assurance experience a plus
  • Intermediate SQL skills a plus
  • An entrepreneurial mindset, active engagement, and the ability to identify and act on opportunities where others may not
  • Desire to be part of a fast growing, nimble team, but willing to help create infrastructure where necessary
  • Comfort with leveraging understanding of technology and data to support a position or drive an initiative
