Job summary

Bowman is seeking a Certified Building Official to join our Charleston, SC team. You will perform field inspections of residential, commercial, and public facility construction, review plans for code compliance, and interact with architects, contractors and the public.

A SC‑registered CBO and related ICC certifications are required, with supervisory experience valued. Responsibilities include leading inspections, mentoring staff, and coordinating with municipalities and state agencies.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture or construction field preferred.
Certified Building Official currently registered in SC required.
3+ years of experience as building inspector; 3+ years as Certified Building Official with supervisory experience.
SC Office of State Engineer/SC Department of Education Office of School Facilities experience preferred.
ICC Residential and Commercial Building Plans Examiner certification required.
ICC Accessibility/Plans Examiner certification preferred.
ICC Energy, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Plans Examiner certifications preferred.
ICC Residential and Commercial Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical Inspector required.
Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state and municipal building codes.
Experience coordinating inspection duties with multiple crews.

Responsibilities

Perform daily field inspections of residential, commercial, and public facility construction projects.
Confer with architects, contractors, builders and the public.
Review residential and commercial plans and calculations for building component code compliance.
Maintain inspection records and enter results into permitting software.
Explain and interpret standards, requirements, and restrictions in a municipality.
Prepare correction sheets and recheck plans after corrections are submitted.
