Job summary

Storey County seeks an advanced Building Inspector to lead inspection services and plan reviews under the Building Official. The role requires extensive experience with commercial and non-commercial structures, code enforcement, and plan checking across IBC, NRS, NAC, and local ordinances.

The candidate must hold relevant ICC certifications, meet education requirements, and demonstrate leadership capabilities with a track record in inspection and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 32 college credits in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related field.
  • Valid ICC Residential or Commercial Inspector Certification and/or Plans Examiner Certification required at time of hire.
  • At least five years of progressive professional inspection experience.
  • Must obtain Accessibility Plans Examiner/Inspector Certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Must obtain Building Trade Code Specialist Certification within 18 months of hire.
  • Must obtain county-sponsored Essential Management Skills Certificate within 12 months of hire.
  • Valid Nevada Driver License for vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and maintain the building inspection function under the Building Official.
  • Perform skilled inspections and plan reviews for commercial and non-commercial structures.
  • Enforce codes based on IBC, NRS, NAC, Storey County ordinances and related regulations.
  • Review plans and conduct field inspections for new and existing buildings and alterations.
  • May supervise one or more subordinates as needed and lead project work.

Job description

Under general direction of the Building Official, plans, organizes, and maintains the building inspection function; performs skilled inspections and plan review for commercial and non-commercial structures; enforcement activities as related to the International Building Code (IBC), Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) and Nevada Administrative Codes (NAC), Storey County ordinances, and all other related federal, state, and local regulations relating to building inspections, building codes, and code enforcement. This is an advance-level position in the Building Inspector series. The incumbent typically works under general to little supervision of the Building Official and is required to perform the full range of duties required in the building inspection field, including reviewing plans and conducting field inspections of new buildings and structures, additions to and alterations of existing buildings and structures, including commercial and non-commercial buildings and structures, for compliance with currently adopted codes. The Senior Building Inspector classification is distinguished from the Building Inspector III classification by the level of experience, education and/or certification, level of supervision received in the line of duties, and that the incumbent may lead one or more subordinate employees as necessary.

  • Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus an equivalent to two years of college-level coursework (32 credits equivalent) in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management, or other closely related field. (Bachelor’s degree in architecture, Planning, Engineering, Business Administration, Earth Sciences, Public Administration, or other closely related field is preferred); AND
  • Must possess a valid ICC Residential or Commercial Combination Inspector Designation and/or Commercial and Residential Plans Examiner Certification at time of hire.
  • At least five years of increasingly responsible professional experience with industrial, commercial, and non-commercial inspections, code enforcement, or building trades and construction. Experience with plan checking preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain an Accessibility Plans Examiner / Inspector Certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a Building Trade Code Specialist Certification within 18 months of hire.
  • Must possess county sponsored (e.g., Pool Pact) Essential Management Skills Certificate within 12 months of hire.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Nevada Driver License appropriate for vehicles and other operated equipment.
  • The ability to pass a criminal background investigation.
