About the Opportunity

Our client is experiencing continued growth and is seeking an experienced Senior Bridge Engineer / Project Managerto join its Richmond, Virginia team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated bridge/structural engineer who is ready to take on increasing leadership responsibilities while managing a diverse portfolio of bridge and transportation structure projects at the local, state, and federal levels.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with project management, client relationship, and team leadership skills. This individual will also play an important role in helping grow and develop the bridge engineering team in the Richmond office and the broader Virginia/DC market.

Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Technical Leadership
  • Lead bridge and structural engineering projects from preliminary design through final design and construction.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, resources, quality, risks, and overall project delivery.
  • Provide technical and structural engineering expertise throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, technical resources, and subconsultants.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and related project deliverables.
  • Prepare project management plans and quality management plans.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules and monitor project progress.
  • Identify project risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Manage subconsultant relationships and deliverables.
  • Prepare progress reports, review invoices, and participate in project financial reviews.
  • Develop extra work order requests and open-end contract task proposals.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to bridge engineering staff.
  • Support employee development through regular one-on-one meetings, project debriefs, and knowledge sharing.
  • Help build and strengthen the bridge engineering team to support continued growth in the Richmond and Northern Virginia/DC markets.
  • Potential opportunity to directly supervise and develop engineering staff.
Client Relations & Business Development
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Communicate project status, milestones, risks, and issues to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead project status presentations and client meetings.
  • Support marketing and business development activities, including proposals, interviews, and Go/No-Go decisions.
  • Assist Practice, Office, and Section leaders in identifying and pursuing new opportunities.
  • Develop a strong understanding of client needs, preferences, and project requirements.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus in Structural Engineering, from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 10+ years of bridge and structural engineering/design experience.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Candidates licensed in another state must be able to obtain a Virginia PE within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Demonstrated experience with bridge/structural projects from preliminary design through construction.
  • Experience managing engineering projects, including scope, schedule, budget, resources, and delivery.
  • Project management experience or demonstrated progression into project management responsibilities.
  • Strong technical, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong client-facing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Experience working with VDOT, Virginia localities, and other Virginia transportation agencies.
  • Experience with multiple project delivery methods, including:
  • Design-Bid-Build
  • Design-Build
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience with business development, proposals, and client relationship management.
  • Hybrid schedule: 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.
  • Remote workdays are Wednesday and Friday
  • Primarily office-based, with occasional field visits and construction-site work.
  • Field work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. may be required.
Compensation & Relocation
  • Competitive compensation based on experience, education, certifications, and qualifications.
  • Bonus eligibility based on level and market alignment.
  • Relocation signing bonus available, paid after 90 days of employment.
