Job summary

The University of Chicago is seeking a Senior Biomedical Informatics Programmer in the BSD MED - General Internal Medicine department to design, optimize, and maintain production-grade pipelines connecting genomic, phenotypic, and clinical data. This role focuses on large-scale biobank studies and deep characterization of individuals with rare variants to uncover novel gene functions and diseases.

Qualifications

• Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
• Experience with 7+ years in a related job discipline.
• Advanced degree (MS or PhD) preferred in bioinformatics, CS, computational biology, or related field.

Responsibilities

• Optimize and maintain production-grade pipelines for gene-disease analyses (GWAS, PheWAS).
• Build computable phenotype algorithms by integrating EHR data with survey sources.
• Develop scripts and pipelines to analyze diverse health datasets (EHR, environmental exposures, OMIM, HPO, DrugBank).
• Provide programming and analytic support across informatics and genomics projects; create scripts for public datasets and lab data.
• Support computational infrastructure for studies of rare genetic variants; enable discovery through clinical characterization.
• Collaborate with scientists and analysts to ensure pipelines are reliable, reproducible, scalable for biobank-scale data.
• Generate public use resources; leads implementation or modification of web-based bioinformatics tools.
• Provide expertise on bioinformatics concepts, applications, and tools; perform related work as needed.
