Illumina seeks a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist focused on AI/ML for protein engineering in San Diego. You will design enzymes for Illumina sequencing platforms, applying protein language models, generative design, and structure-based ML to optimize function.

You will collaborate with engineers, chemists, and biophysicists, develop reusable analysis tools, and contribute to reproducible workflows while advancing sequencing technology.

Qualifications

• Typically requires a PhD with related experience or 5+ years in bioinformatics/AI-based protein design.
• Solid programming skills in at least one major language (Python/C++).
• Strong knowledge of protein sequence/structure modelling and data analysis.

Responsibilities

• Develop and apply bioinformatics tools to design, engineer, or discover novel enzymes.
• Apply AI approaches (protein language models, generative design, structure-based ML) to optimize enzyme function.
• Evaluate novel computational methods using sequence, structure, and experimental data.
