Job summary

Rivian is seeking a Staff Battery Cell Safety Engineer to define, validate, and manage cell safety requirements for Rivian's battery platforms. You will work with cross-functional teams to ensure safety and reliability across development cycles and production.

Responsibilities include developing test plans, overseeing abuse testing programs, and driving safety improvements from cell to pack level. The role requires deep technical expertise and strong collaboration across disciplines.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in battery industry focused on Li-ion cell safety, failure analysis and abuse testing.
• Master's or PhD in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical Eng or related field.
• Knowledge of high voltage battery packs and regulatory landscape.
• Familiar with cell abuse testing methodologies and failure modes.
• Experience coordinating internal staff and external test resources.
• Expert-level knowledge of Li-ion cell design, thermal abuse behavior and failure progression.

Responsibilities

• Define and develop cell safety specs and abuse testing requirements (thermal runaway, nail penetration, etc.).
• Establish internal Rivian cell safety standards exceeding regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with cross-functional safety and supplier teams to translate goals into specs.
• Coordinate internal staff and external test resources for cell-level abuse testing programs.
• Analyze test data to identify failure modes and drive design improvements.
• Integrate cell safety inputs into the battery pack and module designs.
