Job summary

Databricks in San Francisco seeks a Staff Backline Engineer to serve as a technical SME and escalation point for complex ML/AI issues. You will work with Support, Engineering, Product, and customers to reproduce issues, identify root causes, and drive them to resolution.

You will mentor engineers, improve diagnostics, tooling, and automation, and contribute to cross-functional initiatives that impact the platform. This role requires deep ML/AI tooling knowledge and strong technical communication.

Qualifications

• Deep troubleshooting experience with distributed ML/AI systems.
• Strong Python experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Scikit-Learn.
• Solid knowledge of Databricks ML/AI tech including MLflow, Model Serving, Spark MLlib.
• Excellent technical communication across teams.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a senior escalation point for complex ML/AI issues involving training, inference, and model serving.
• Perform deep technical investigations using logs, traces, metrics, and workloads.
• Reproduce customer issues through hands-on experimentation and performance analysis.
• Troubleshoot training/inference failures, resource utilization, and deployment failures.
• Partner with Engineering and Product to drive issues to resolution and improve the product.
• Identify recurring failures and build better diagnostics and tooling.
• Mentor engineers and raise troubleshooting capabilities across Support.
