Job summary

Techstack is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer (Node.js) to support a Canadian partner with a large backend ecosystem across legacy and cloud-native services. You will own production stability, investigate complex issues, and gradually modernize systems while collaborating with a small, experienced team and a client-side PM.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of commercial software development experience.
• Experience building and supporting REST APIs and distributed systems.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases.
• Confident hands-on experience with AWS and cloud infrastructure.
• Ability to work independently on complex systems with limited documentation.
• Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools in daily work.

Responsibilities

• Support and improve backend services, APIs, admin portals, websites, and automation tools.
• Maintain and modernize existing applications across legacy and modern tech.
• Investigate production issues, troubleshoot, and find root causes.
• Work with AWS services, cloud infrastructure, and deployment pipelines.
• Improve stability, performance, and maintainability of systems.
• Explore unfamiliar codebases, document and onboard new team members.
• Use AI tools for coding, debugging, testing, refactoring, and documentation.
• Review AI-generated code for quality, security, and maintainability.
• Collaborate with client-side stakeholders during onboarding and knowledge transfer.
• Take ownership and reduce technical debt.

About the product

Intro

We are looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer (Node.js) to join a long-term project for our Canadian partner, an international software company with a portfolio of Windows products distributed under multiple brands.

The project involves a large, interconnected ecosystem of applications and services built and maintained over many years. It combines legacy systems with modern cloud-based solutions and includes backend services, administrative platforms, APIs, websites, integrations, and internal tools supporting product distribution, marketing, and operations.

You’ll work on maintaining production stability, investigating complex technical issues, improving existing systems, and gradually modernizing the technical environment.

Your team

You’ll join a small, experienced Techstack team supporting a diverse backend ecosystem. You’ll work closely with a Senior Engineer who has deep knowledge of the systems, another Senior Engineer involved part-time, and a Project Manager on the client side.

The role offers plenty of independence and ownership, with an opportunity to work with complex systems, share knowledge, and make a real impact on their stability and improvement.

Your responsibilities

Support and improve backend services, APIs, admin portals, websites, and automation tools.

Maintain and gradually modernize existing applications, working across both legacy and newer technologies.

Investigate production issues, troubleshoot problems, and find their root causes.

Work with AWS services, cloud infrastructure, and deployment pipelines.

Improve the stability, performance, and maintainability of existing systems.

Dive into unfamiliar systems, figure out how they work, and help keep technical documentation up to date.

Use AI tools in your daily work for coding, debugging, testing, refactoring, and documentation.

Review AI-generated code and make sure it meets the required standards for quality, security, and maintainability.

Work closely with the team and client-side stakeholders during onboarding and knowledge transfer.

Take ownership of your areas and help reduce technical debt.

It's about you

5+ years of commercial software development experience.

Experience building and supporting REST APIs and distributed systems.

Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases.

Confident hands-on experience with AWS and cloud infrastructure.

Experience troubleshooting production systems and working with legacy applications.

Good understanding of software architecture, design patterns, security, and system integrations.

Comfortable working independently with complex systems and limited documentation.

Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar in everyday work.

Ability to use AI tools for coding, debugging, testing, refactoring, documentation, and exploring unfamiliar codebases — while carefully reviewing the generated output.

Strong sense of ownership, attention to detail, and a practical approach to solving problems.
