Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Senior Software Engineer focused on backend platform and API ownership. You will design, build, and operate scalable backend services powering critical product capabilities, ensuring secure, reliable APIs and high observability.

You will mentor engineers, drive CI/CD readiness, and define API standards while partnering with product teams to translate requirements into robust solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in a technical field.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong hands-on experience building backend applications and production APIs.
• Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, or similar.
• Experience designing RESTful APIs and service-to-service integrations.
• Experience with cloud platforms and distributed systems.
• Strong fundamentals: testing, debugging, version control, and code review.
• Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases, data modeling, and performance tuning.
• Ability to solve moderately complex engineering problems and deliver production-quality software.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support backend services and APIs for internal and customer-facing apps.
• Own service architecture and technical design decisions for backend platform capabilities.
• Build secure, reusable APIs and service integrations.
• Improve scalability, performance, resilience, and observability across services.
• Lead logging, monitoring, alerts, and operational practices.
• Partner with product and engineering stakeholders to translate requirements into solutions.
• Drive code quality through reviews, testing, and documentation.
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement fixes.
• Mentor engineers and improve backend development practices.
• Support CI/CD, release readiness, and automation for faster, reliable delivery.
• Define and enforce API design standards and service reliability expectations.
• Build integrations with internal and external systems using modern patterns.
• Write efficient, secure, and scalable code with good test coverage.
• Collaborate across teams to reduce technical debt and improve platform consistency.
• Contribute to architectural reviews and influence backend direction.
• Help establish measurable service health indicators and guardrails.
