Job summary

JPMorgan Chase & Co. is seeking a Lead Software Engineer in New York, NY to guide backend platforms on an agile team. You will shape designs, write production code, and collaborate across teams to solve business problems with modern engineering practices.

You will lead architecture, data modeling, and API design for high-throughput systems, while mentoring engineers and ensuring reliable operations in a secure environment.

Qualifications

• Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 5+ years applied experience.
• Expert proficiency in Java (Java 17+), including concurrency, collections, and performance tuning.
• Hands-on experience building and operating distributed systems with Apache Kafka.
• Strong AWS experience and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CloudFormation).
• Experience leading projects/teams in Agile/Scrum environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of distributed, event-driven back-end services (Java, Kafka, AWS) from concept to production support.
• Set architecture direction and standards for scalability, reliability, and observability.
• Partner with product, architecture, and platform teams to turn requirements into resilient designs and roadmaps.
• Elevate engineering quality through CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews, and operational readiness (SLIs/SLOs, on-call).
• Own production operations for critical services (monitoring, incident response, root-cause analysis).
• Drive data modeling and API design for high-throughput, low-latency systems with backward compatibility.
