Job summary

DRS IT Solutions is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer/Technical Lead to independently design, develop, deploy, and maintain production-grade backend services. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, scalable solutions and guide technical initiatives while remaining hands-on with coding and system design.

The ideal candidate has deep experience with Kotlin/Java, Spring Boot, distributed systems, and modern cloud-native tooling.

Qualifications

• Strong production experience with Kotlin or Java/JVM and Spring Boot.
• Proficiency in designing and supporting REST APIs and distributed systems.
• Extensive knowledge of MongoDB or Amazon DocumentDB, including data modeling, indexing, migrations, concurrency control, and atomic updates.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka, Avro, Schema Registry, asynchronous processing, retries, and ensuring idempotency.
• Experience with deployment and orchestration tools such as AWS, EKS/Kubernetes, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Working knowledge of AWS IAM/IRSA, secrets management tools like Vault, and service networking configurations.
• Strong testing practices, including unit and integration testing, utilizing tools like Testcontainers.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot production issues, implement observability solutions, and execute incident response and rollback strategies.
• Demonstrated technical leadership with the ability to drive cross-functional collaboration and work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend services with a focus on performance, reliability, and security.
• Leading technical initiatives and providing mentorship to junior team members.
• Collaborating with product managers and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Implementing best practices for API design, data modeling, and system architecture.
• Managing deployment pipelines, infrastructure automation, and ensuring continuous integration and delivery.
• Monitoring system health, performing root cause analysis, and resolving production incidents efficiently.
• Driving improvements in observability, logging, and metrics collection to enhance system visibility.
• Staying updated with emerging technologies and industry trends, and recommending innovative solutions to improve existing systems.
