Job summary

Uber Freight is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design and build highly scalable backend services and microservices for its logistics platform. You will work on APIs, data models, and architecture decisions, while mentoring peers and driving best practices across engineering teams.

You will partner with Product, Operations, and other engineers to deliver robust, high-performing solutions, with a focus on reliability, security, and maintainable code in a hybrid work environment in Chicago.

Qualifications

• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• Minimum 5 years of software engineering experience.
• Strong coding skills in backend languages (Go, Java, Python, or C++).
• Experience building and scaling microservices and distributed systems with APIs.

Responsibilities

• Build Scalable Backend Services: design, develop, and maintain high-throughput microservices and distributed systems.
• Lead System Architecture: drive architectural decisions, data models, and API contracts for resilient backend infrastructure.
• Champion Engineering Excellence: advocate for automated testing, security, code maintainability, and deployment pipelines.
• Drive Scoping & Product Delivery: collaborate with Product/Operations/engineering to define scope and ship features.
• Shape the Technical Roadmap: identify debt and bottlenecks to guide long-term scalability.
• Mentor & Foster Culture: mentor engineers and conduct code/design reviews.
• Own Production Health & Reliability: troubleshoot production issues and improve availability.
