Job summary

Mercato is hiring a Backend Engineer to own the Java services powering our SaaS platform, including APIs and data ingestion pipelines. You’ll work on a small, remote engineering team delivering end-to-end solutions with autonomy and accountability.

We value independent problem-solvers and egoless collaboration, focusing on pragmatic delivery and learning new things. Candidates using AI-assisted tooling will fit well in our fast-moving environment.

Qualifications

• Strong Java experience building APIs and data processing
• Experience with AWS services (ECS, S3, RDS)
• Solid relational DB fundamentals (MySQL or similar)
• Proven ability to work effectively in small, remote teams
• Clear written communication; document decisions and PRs

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend Java services (APIs and data ingestion)
• Own end-to-end deliverables from investigation to deployment and monitoring
• Operate and deploy using AWS (ECS, S3, RDS, Redshift)
• Write solid unit tests and maintain code quality without slowing the team
• Collaborate asynchronously with product/design/engineers and document proposals
