Job summary

Motive is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the Equipment Monitoring team. You will build backend systems that provide real-time visibility into fleets—location, utilization, and health of equipment—using data from IoT devices like asset gateways and sensors.

You’ll design ingestion pipelines and collaborate with Embedded/IoT teams on end-to-end data flows. You will craft observable, scalable APIs, operate stream-processing pipelines, and help drive engineering excellence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 5+ years of software development experience.
• Experience building distributed, event-driven pipelines (Kafka, Flink, Kinesis).
• Proficiency in Ruby, Golang, Kotlin or Java is a plus.
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis, Cassandra).
• Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, Azure or private clouds).
• IoT/sensor data or geospatial systems experience is a plus.
• Ownership mindset and problem-solving ability.
• Hybrid in-office work arrangement (2 days/week).

Responsibilities

• Develop highly observable, reliable, scalable backend services for IoT telemetry.
• Build and operate stream-processing pipelines (Kafka, Flink) for geo-fencing and asset tracking.
• Design, build, and maintain scalable APIs for internal and external apps.
• Collaborate with Embedded, IoT, and cross-functional teams on data contracts.
• Reduce technical debt and improve code quality.
• Leverage AI tools to boost productivity and code quality.
• Work on AWS Cloud infrastructure and mentor fellow engineers.
