Job summary

Ellipsis Health, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, seeks a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and scale core systems powering its conversational AI platform. You will own TypeScript-based backend services and collaborate with AI/ML teams to deliver secure, reliable healthcare solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of professional backend experience with TypeScript/JavaScript.
• Strong TS/JS and Node.js backend/API development expertise.
• Experience designing/consuming RESTful APIs and GraphQL.
• Solid understanding of microservices, distributed systems, and system design.
• Cloud experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Strong SQL/NoSQL skills (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB).
• Security best practices, authentication/authorization, and secure data handling.
• CI/CD pipelines and production monitoring/alerting experience.
• Excellent collaboration in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain end-to-end features across TypeScript-based backend services.
• Architect and implement scalable APIs and microservices for conversational AI workflows.
• Own services in production end-to-end including deployment and monitoring.
• Lead database design and data pipelines for structured/unstructured healthcare data.
• Maintain secure integrations with healthcare systems and external platforms.
• Implement and manage authentication/authorization across systems.
• Integrate identity management like Zitadel.
• Ensure HIPAA/FHIR compliance across backend systems.
• Optimize performance, reliability, and scalability for high-volume workloads.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and observability for production services.
• Troubleshoot production issues and participate in on-call rotations.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering best practices.
• Stay current with emerging technologies and apply them to improve velocity.
