Job summary

Backstory, headquartered in San Francisco, is building AI systems that reason over massive enterprise data to help leaders understand what to do next. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Matching team, you will craft scalable backend services, data pipelines, and ML-enabled features powering Backstory’s AI engine.

You will work with a mix of Python/Scala/Java, data platforms, and microservice architectures to enable robust, cost-efficient systems.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional backend experience in enterprise environments.
• 3+ years in data analysis, data science tasks, and/or ML.
• 2+ years programming in Python, Scala, or Java.
• Experience with SQL and RDBMS; Spark for large-scale data processing.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement core backend services and data pipelines.
• Perform data-driven research using big data and the Data Science toolset.
• Document design choices and operational knowledge to deploy and run services.
• Provide test coverage (unit/integration) with focus on performance and cost.
• Ensure robust alerting, dashboards, and runbooks for production services.
• Collaborate across teams to build features aligned with business needs.
• Follow software design and development best practices within the team.
