Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer for our Varsity Yearbook team. The ideal candidate is proactive, capable of working independently and collaboratively, and will play a critical role in our Yearbook Technology team.

Responsibilities

1. Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java and frameworks like Spring Boot and Hibernate.
2. Build and optimize RESTful APIs and microservices architectures.
3. Work with AWS services including Lambda, EC2, S3, RDS, SNS, and SQS.
4. Implement containerization solutions using Docker and Kubernetes on AWS ECS/EKS.
5. Design and optimize database schemas and query performance.
6. Collaborate with frontend engineers to integrate server-side logic with user-facing elements.
7. Implement error handling, monitoring, and logging systems.
8. Participate in code reviews and mentor junior engineers.
9. Troubleshoot production issues and implement solutions.
10. Continuously improve development processes and infrastructure.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Minimum of 8 years of professional software development experience.
• Proficiency in Java and frameworks like Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.
• Deep understanding of RESTful API design principles.
• Extensive experience with AWS services such as Lambda, EC2, S3, DynamoDB, RDS.
• Experience with infrastructure as code tools like CloudFormation, Terraform, or CDK.
• Knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline).
• Strong understanding of database design and SQL/NoSQL technologies.
• Familiarity with serverless architectures.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and in teams.
• Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
• Open-source contributions and performance tuning experience are preferred.
• Knowledge of front-end technologies such as Angular is a plus.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.

Physical Requirements

This role is primarily sedentary, requiring the ability to sit or stand for long periods, lift files, and operate office equipment as needed.
