Job summary

AccuWeather seeks a Software Developer III to lead the design and development of backend software that processes real-time weather data flows, including alerts and observations. You will own end-to-end data processing, monitoring, and data quality standards while mentoring engineers in a fast-paced Agile environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.
• 5+ years designing and developing backend software or distributed systems.
• Advanced experience in Scala or Java with functional programming concepts.
• Expertise deploying applications in cloud environments such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Deep experience with relational database architecture, SQL, and performance optimization at scale.
• Experience architecting solutions for XML/JSON, RESTful APIs, and data formats across providers.
• Experience leading design discussions, code reviews, and technical decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, testing, and maintenance of complex backend software processors for real-time weather data.
• Own end-to-end data flows from source to production database, including monitoring and incident response.
• Design and implement new processing capabilities and enhance processors for new data providers and features.
• Build testable, deployable, and monitorable data processing software.
• Own database schemas and SQL objects used by backend processing apps.
• Define reliability, performance, and scalability targets for backend processing software.
• Drive technical alignment across teams and stakeholders on complex processing solutions.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve complex production issues affecting data processing systems.
• Conduct code reviews and mentor other developers in data processing practices.
• Define documentation standards to keep the team's knowledge current.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and decide what to adopt for the platform.
• Contribute to planning and continuous improvement of development processes.
