Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve core platform capabilities across its DevSecOps suite. You will drive technical direction, architect modular contexts, and advance production-grade agentic AI systems for developer workflows.

You will mentor engineers, set backend standards, and collaborate with product, design, data, and infrastructure teams to translate complex needs into resilient, scalable solutions in a fully remote, asynchronous environment.

Qualifications

• Backend systems architecture, API design, and performance tuning in a high-scale product environment.
• Proficiency in Ruby, Go, Python, or C++ with ability to pick up new tech stacks rapidly.
• Architectural judgment in modular boundaries and migration-safe schemas.
• Production experience with agentic AI systems, autonomous execution loops and tool-use orchestration.
• Strong written and spoken communication for asynchronous remote work.

Responsibilities

• Design and ship backend features with high autonomy across modular-monolith and microservices.
• Build and operate production-grade agentic AI systems and autonomous loops.
• Define backend standards for code, API design, testing, and operational readiness.
• Diagnose performance bottlenecks and support scaling; act as technical owner for core services.
• Mentor engineers, conduct reviews, and document technical decisions.
• Collaborate with PMs, Designers, Data Engineers, and Infra leads to translate complex needs into robust plans.
