Job summary

Career Renew is recruiting on behalf of a client for a Senior/Staff Backend Engineer – AI, an onsite role in San Francisco. Base salary range 180–260K USD, plus benefits and equity. You’ll own end-to-end backend design and automation for insurance tech workflows.

Must be hands-on with modern backend languages (TypeScript preferred), and actively use AI coding tools. 5–15 years of backend experience, startup exposure, and ability to work in-person 5 days/week in SF are required.

Qualifications

• 5–15 years of backend software engineering experience.
• Experience at an early-stage, VC-backed startup within the last 4 years.
• Proven experience building and shipping backend systems.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages, preferably TypeScript.
• Must be actively using modern AI coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor).
• Willingness to work in-person 5 days/week in San Francisco.
• Experience in insurance/fintech/healthcare is a plus.
• Ability to interact with customers and translate needs into technical solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design and ship end-to-end backend workflows for insurance operations.
• Integrate with diverse, low-tech systems and build reliable interactions.
• Collaborate with customers to gather feedback and communicate technical concepts.
• Contribute to greenfield engineering work and browser automation layers.
• Work with the team on system design to solve complex problems in a startup environment.
