Ideal Candidate Profile
This role requires more than a traditional DevOps engineer. The successful candidate will have previously walked into an environment with significant manual processes and helped design and implement the organization’s future-state CI/CD architecture from the ground up.
They should be equally comfortable whiteboarding an enterprise DevOps strategy with senior technical leadership and then working directly within Azure DevOps to build YAML pipelines, establish Boards, configure integrations, troubleshoot deployments, and demonstrate the new model to engineering teams.
The goal is to leave the organization with a scalable, repeatable, secure, and well-documented Azure DevOps framework that development teams can continue to operate and expand long term.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Azure DevOps CI/CD Architect to lead a major DevOps modernization initiative. The organization is transitioning from largely manual development, build, release, and deployment processes to a standardized and automated environment leveraging Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Azure Boards.
This individual will serve as the technical architect and hands-on lead for the transformation, helping define the future-state DevOps architecture, establish standards and governance, build scalable CI/CD frameworks, and guide development teams through adoption.
The ideal candidate has successfully led similar enterprise transformations and is comfortable operating at both the architecture and hands-on engineering level. This person should be capable of assessing an existing environment, defining a roadmap, designing the solution, and directly implementing pipelines, automation, processes, and best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Automate everything from the requirements all the way through deployment. This includes: automated git operations, (GIT / REPOSITORY / BRANCHES / VERSIONING)
- Automated branch creation, naming, versioning, management.
- Automated merging.
- Automated unit tests triggered and run at every commit.
- Automated component integration tests triggered and run at every commit
- Automated system integration tests triggered and run at every commit
- Dashboards and metrics to monitor the above. (DASHBOARDS AND MONITORING)
- Packaging, versioning, publishing (PACKAGING / VERSIONING / PUBLISHING)
- Automated deployment (DEPLOYMENT)
- Automated documentation publishing (DOCUMENTATION)
- Automated process flow and tracking (PROJECT MANAGEMENT / REQUIREMENTS TRACKING / PROCESS AUTOMATION / JIRA)
- automated notifications for developers / code reviewers / QA / UAT / business on ticket status change.
- Automated ticket status updates (either the ticket status drives the action, or the action drives the ticket status, I don't care which, but it needs to be integrated and automated)
- Dashboards and monitoring of SLA response times to code-review requests and QA/UAT requests.
- Integration of QA tests into automated unit tests and/or component-level tests.
- Integration of business requirements and acceptance criteria into automated tests.
- Lead the transformation from manual build, release, and deployment processes to automated Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
- Assess the current software development and deployment environment and identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and process improvement.
- Define the overall Azure DevOps architecture, strategy, standards, and technical roadmap.
- Design, build, and implement reusable CI/CD pipeline frameworks using Azure Pipelines and YAML.
- Establish best practices around branching strategies, source control, build automation, release management, environment promotion, and deployment.
- Implement and optimize Azure Boards to support Agile development processes, backlog management, sprint planning, work-item tracking, and reporting.
- Integrate Azure DevOps with development, testing, security, infrastructure, and enterprise systems.
- Develop reusable pipeline templates and automation patterns that can be leveraged across multiple applications and development teams.
- Partner with development, architecture, infrastructure, security, QA, and business stakeholders to define DevOps standards and adoption strategies.
- Establish appropriate DevSecOps controls, including security scanning, code quality checks, approval gates, secrets management, and deployment governance.
- Design deployment strategies across development, QA, staging, and production environments.
- Evaluate existing manual processes and determine where automation will provide the greatest operational and delivery improvements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineering and development teams as they transition to the new DevOps model.
- Create documentation, standards, reference architectures, and operating procedures to support long-term adoption.
- Troubleshoot complex pipeline, deployment, integration, and environment issues.
- Help establish metrics and reporting around deployment frequency, build success, release quality, lead time, and overall DevOps maturity.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of overall IT / software engineering experience, with significant experience in DevOps, cloud engineering, or platform engineering.
- 5+ years of deep hands-on Azure DevOps experience.
- Proven experience serving as a Senior DevOps Architect, Azure DevOps Architect, Platform Architect, or Lead DevOps Engineer.
- Demonstrated experience leading an organization through a transition from manual software delivery processes to automated CI/CD.
- Advanced experience with:
- Build and release automation
- Branching and source-control strategies
- Strong experience designing enterprise-level reusable pipeline frameworks and templates.
- Experience integrating automated testing, code-quality scanning, security scanning, and approval workflows into CI/CD pipelines.

- Experience with scripting and automation using technologies such as PowerShell, Bash, Azure CLI, or Python.
- Strong understanding of infrastructure, application deployment, networking, identity, security, and environment management concepts.
