Job summary

The Spelman & Johnson Group is assisting the University of Maryland in recruiting an Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students to advocate for students and lead the Division of Student Affairs. The role emphasizes crisis response, student advocacy, and cross-campus collaboration.

The AVP/DOS will oversee CARE and BETA teams, supervise multiple deans, and develop university-wide partnerships to enhance student success and well-being across the campus community.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field.
• 15+ years of significant progressively responsible experience in higher education, student affairs, or a related field.
• Demonstrated supervisory and organizational leadership experience.
• Experience managing crisis situations, complex student concerns, or behavioral risk.
• Significant understanding of student conduct administration.
• Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Dean of Students Office and serve on the Vice President for Student Affairs Council and Leadership Team.
• Supervise the Assistant Dean of Students, Family Engagement, Student Conduct, and Thrive Center for Essential Needs.
• Oversee the CARE team and Behavioral Evaluation and Threat Assessment (BETA) team.
• Develop strategic partnerships with parents, families, and across divisions.
• Respond to crises with sound judgment, calm leadership, and effective communication.
