Your Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our growing Energy and Resources Team across North America. The position reports to the Discipline Manager – Instrumentation and Controls and is a full‑time staff employee.
You will provide project support throughout the entire Energy and Resources operating unit, working on projects in Mining, Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Oil & Gas, and Renewable Energy. You will evaluate, select, specify, and engineer instrumentation and control systems or products for projects, perform calculations, quality control, and field work.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Maintain safety by understanding and adhering to health and safety rules and regulations for Stantec and its clients.
- Develop design through verbal, written, and visual methods including sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and redlines.
- Support or lead project coordination meetings with internal multi‑discipline team members and external consultants, owner representatives, contractors, sub‑contractors, and vendors.
- Participate in client project requirement meetings, PHAs, value analysis sessions, and basic cost estimating.
- Assist project leads in developing and managing project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule.
- Act as a client‑facing representative by attending client meetings (remote or in‑person) and communicating directly with clients.
- Attend part‑time office presence as required.
- Lead and/or work on multiple projects as required.
- Lead or be a member of the technical team developing instrumentation and controls deliverables such as datasheets, instrument index, instrumentation calculations, and installation details.
- Provide input and support for P&ID development.
- Participate in HAZOP and other process safety assessment, evaluation, and design sessions.
- Participate in 3D model and constructability reviews.
- Evaluate, select, specify, and design instrumentation and associated systems for projects.
- Develop controls designs and deliverables including shutdown keys, control narratives, system architecture, network details, integration plans, panel designs, wiring schematics, and logic and safety deliverables.
- Design facility and mine‑wide industrial networks, including fibre‑optic backbones, leaky feeder radio, hoist signaling, Wi‑Fi/LTE coverage, and selection of ruggedized equipment.
- Specify, design, and select control and auxiliary systems and networks in a mine environment.
- Lead and support design of control/server rooms with console layouts, network segregation, server racks, UPS, patch panels, dust‑protected HVAC, and physical security.
- Integrate multiple utility auxiliary systems and communication networks (CCTV, security systems, fire and gas detection).
- Develop instrument location plans and cable routing layouts.
- Complete cable schedules and select cables (LSZH, chemical and fire resistant).
- Design within hazardous area classification standards (NEC, IECEx, ATEX, ISA) for gases, dusts, and confined space hazards.
- Specify and select fire, gas, smoke, heat, and other detection systems and integrate them into the facility control system.
- Prepare field instrumentation specifications and material requisition development.
- Review and analyze vendor equipment packages and documentation for purchased instrumentation and control equipment, ensuring safety and constructability before issuance to clients.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Self‑starter who handles change and works with minimal supervision, willing to challenge own work and that of others.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal abilities in a team environment.
- Prior experience as a Lead Engineer on detailed engineering/construction projects with a consulting firm or owner’s team.
- Experience in underground mine design is a strong asset.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and project engineering experience.
- Ability to lead a project team and mentor junior staff members.
- Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~10% travel).
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or Technical Diploma in Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, or Electronics Engineering.
- 10+ years of engineering, design, and construction experience in heavy industry sectors (Oil & Gas, Thermal and Hydro‑Power Generation, Mining). Power sector experience is especially beneficial.
- PE licensed in Texas or Arizona, or a willingness/ability to acquire a PE license. Licenses in other jurisdictions are beneficial.
Pay Range
- MN, OH, VT, & various California and New York areas – $90,900.00 – $131,800.00 annually.
- CO, HI, IL, MD & various California and New Jersey areas – $100,000.00 – $145,000.00 annually.
- WA, DC & various California and Massachusetts areas – $107,300.00 – $155,500.00 annually.
Pay Transparency
In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Compensation is based on education, qualifications, experience, and work location. Certain roles are bonus eligible. Part‑time roles are pro‑rated.
